Back Pain During Pregnancy Research
In a review of 400 pregnancies back pain during pregnancy was reported in 42.5% of the pregnancies and 44.7% of the deliveries. Of the 170 pregnancies with reported back pain, 72% also reported back pain while in labor. In this study group, those pregnant women who had received chiropractic care experienced decreased back pain during their pregnancy as well as experiencing less pain during labor. There are some suggestions in the literature that back pain during pregnancy may affect pregnancy and delivery in ways other than increasing discomfort or restricting activity. Conway reported many of the women with low back pain during pregnancy also had longer labors. Melzack and Schaffelberg suggested that there may be a relationship between back pain during pregnancy and during delivery.
Back pain during pregnancy research suggests that there may be a mechanical dysfunction of the spinal joints (a syndrome comprised of restricted joint mobility, local pain and tenderness, and muscled spasm) and has been documented in the manipulative literature. Such joint dysfunction of the low back and pelvic joints has been associated with back labor as well as other gynecological complaints that refer pain to the low back. A report in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics reported that 84% of the women that experienced
back pain during pregnancy received relief with chiropractic manipulation. The same results also discovered that the group of women, with low back pain, who went through chiropractic treatment had significantly less chance of experiencing back labor.
In conclusion, chiropractic manipulation may offer effective relief in decreasing both
back pain during pregnancy and the occurrence of back pain during labor. Treatments are gentle, safe, natural, noninvasive and cost effective without the use of harmful drugs.
